'MEDICAL GRADE' SKINCARE ???

'Medical-Grade' Skincare: What It Really Means (and What It Doesn’t)

'Medical-grade' skincare. It sounds official and science-backed—but here’s the truth consumers deserve to know.

The FDA recognizes only two categories of skincare products:

  1. Cosmetics – Products intended to cleanse, beautify, or improve appearance. These do not require FDA approval before being sold.
  2. Drugs – Products intended to treat or prevent disease or alter the structure or function of skin. These must undergo FDA review and approval.

That’s it.
There is no FDA definition, classification, or regulatory standard for the term 'medical grade.'

So what does 'medical-grade' actually mean?

In practice, it usually means one (or more) of the following:

  • The product is sold in a doctor’s office or med spa.
  • It is more expensive.
  • It contains familiar active ingredients at standard, and sometimes higher, concentrations.
  • It is marketed as being “stronger,” “clinical,” or “professional.” But that doesn't mean it is.
  • None of these factors automatically make a product safer, more effective, or more scientifically validated.

What 'medical-grade' does not mean

  • It does not mean FDA-approved.
  • It does not guarantee superior results.
  • It does not mean better absorption or higher quality ingredients.
  • It does not mean the product was tested more rigorously than over-the-counter skincare.

The takeaway:

The effectiveness of a skincare product depends on its ingredients, their concentrations, formulation quality, and how consistently you use it—not on marketing language.

At FryFace.com, our goal is to help you see past buzzwords and choose skincare based on evidence, transparency, and value, not hype.

If a product truly intends to do something medical—treating acne, reversing sun damage, or altering skin biology—it must meet FDA drug standards. If not, it’s a cosmetic, regardless of what the label claims.

Facts over fluff. Always.
